Instruction and Assessments

Instruction and assessments are able to help the students as well as the teacher to understand where they are at within the lesson/ in their education. I believe assessments are very important because of this reasoning within each lesson and/or unit plan. There are in some way at least one assessment within every single lesson whether it be walking around and checking for understanding, having them complete a rough draft/ worksheet for examples, or a quiz. Within my student teaching I think assessments are very important on how to assess whether or not the class is truly understanding the concept and idea for what you are trying to convey. For example, in third grade they are learning about Paul Klee and abstract art. For the assessment piece, they are first completing a short quiz on the noted we took on Paul Klee and then they are also completing a worksheet by creating 9 different examples of patterns they will be using to decorate in their final art piece. This is able to tell us how much the students understand so far about Paul Klee in specific as well as their idea of abstract art and it will also be able to help the students in creating and finishing their final art piece that is inspired by Paul Klee’s painting “Castle and Sun”.

Methods

Some methods of assessments that I have used in the past as well as during my student teaching are:

Formative

  • check in worksheets

  • quiz

  • exit ticket

  • Walking around and checking for understanding

  • rough drafts

Within these different methods I feel that all of these assessments are very efficient mostly because all of then assessments above are formative and I believe formative assessments are able to extremely help the outcome of the summative assessment. During the unit and during these formative assessments, you can gage where the students are at at understanding the content which in turn will show in the summative assessment.

Summative

  • Final Projects

I believe a final project is a very efficient summative assessment because it is able to tell overall how the student is understanding not only the content but some techniques and materials as well.

 Diagnostic

  • Pre-tests

  • warm up

in the past I have done some pre-tests to test some students prior knowledge before the lesson. During my student teaching, the students have warm up activities everyday and I feel as though this could be an example of that as well because they are being asked what they know about the content before we begin or continue further on. I feel as though these are very effective because it can give the studetns a jump start on some main information as well as tells and shows the teacher where they could get lost in the future as well as maybe prevent some confusion.
