First Placement

Elementary K-5th

Kindergarten

In Kinder garden we started out the school year learning about lines, shapes, and color. We discussed abstract art, and read a story called "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. They then created their own dot using lines, shapes, and color. They created a dot and a not-a-dot and glued them to colorful construction paper for display.

Their second project we continued talking about abstract art in which they learned about the father of abstract art, Wassily Kandinsky. They created abstract art by using 3 straight lines and 3 wavy lines and colored in the shapes each of those made.

First Grade

In First grade the students started out the same as kinder garden and read the story "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds and created their own dot.

Their second project they continued to talk about abstract art and began talking about Wassily Kandinsky. They created an art piece inspired by his painting Concentric circles using warm, cool, and primary colors. They then listened to music and created concentric circles based on the emotion of the music.

Second Grade

In second grade they had started by reading a story called "The Legend of The Chinese Dragon" in which they learned about how the Chinese dragon came to be and what it was made up of ( head pf horse, body of snake, scales of fish, talons of bird, and horns of Ox.) They then practiced going step by step to draw the dragon, they then stained their final papers with tea to give it an aged look, and began drawing their final dragons, tracing everything with a fine tip marker. Towards the middle, we read another story based on what they would use for the background on how the 4 Chinese Dragons saved the people by bringing them rain. The students were able to draw a background from the story and finally color the dragon with traditional chinese dragon colors.

Third grade

In third grade, the students began learning about abstract art and the artist Paul Klee. They looked specifically at the piece "Castle and Sun" and recreated their own using patterns and warm/cool colors.

Forth Grade

In Forth Grade, they began a unit on Medieval art. They learned about illuminated Manuscripts and related them to books today and also looked at the growth of how books became to be and how the first printing press was made.

After all this, they began a project making their own illuminated letters by creating their first initial of their first name. They had to illustrate their letter with either pattern, something they like, or something that begins with the same letter. They then traced all pencils lines with crayon or colored pencil and painted over everything. The last step was to Illuminate which they used gold sharpie and illuminated 3 things within their letter.

Fifth Grade

In fifth grade, they started a unit on Japanese art in which they discussed printmaking. We had talked about elements within printmaking such as a strong diagonal line, depicting everyday life, nature, and the sublime aspect of nature all of which they had to have depicted within their prints using styrofoam and washable markers.
